Callahan chronicals Essay Example For Students

Callahan chronicals Essay After reading the Callahan Chronicals I have come to realize that there are many things to be learned in life. This book captured my attention by trying to figure out just what it is that Spider Robinson is trying to pass on to the reader. I have come to the conclusion that the author is trying to portray real life situations with a little twist to keep the reader interested. There is a lesson to be learned from each story. Each visitor that passes through Mike Callahans bar is teaching the people who are already there a lesson and there is In the Centipedes Dilemma I learned that apperance really dosent matter. Dink Fogerty led the whole bar to believe that he was incapable of even throwing a dart but then he, dispite his image, used telekinesis (mind over matter) to project the darts into the dartboard with tremendus accuracy. You cannot just sleep on your opponents in real life situations. You must look beyond your opponents apparent capabilities to be a contender in any game, esp ically the game of life. If you dont you will surely get stepped on throughout your life. If the people at Callahans didnt catch on to Dinks attribute then he would have walked out of that place knowing that he screwed over the entire bar. I have learned to look for things like this now and will not get decieved eaisly in my lifetime. Fogerty wasnt all that bad though, any bird that can keep their glass filled with gin all the time would be a good companion for mostly anyone. The man and the dog won the bet and the dog really could talk. The funny thingwas that the man was a mute and the whole time the dog was doing the talking. The people at Callahans thought that it was pretty cool even though they lostmoney. Mike felt bad for the since they were so nice about everything and nobodyever gave them a chance. All they knew was how to hustle for money. MikeCallahan offered to get the dog a job on the radio and the guy a job workingwith computers. I learned from this that it is good to help good people even ifthey play you for some cash. I also learned not to bet because anything ispossible if a dog can talk. In Have You Heard The One it was tall tales night atCallahans. Jake told a story about how her was not superstitious. In his storyhe asked god for a sign to know if something bad was going to happen to him. Sure enough a bird ended up falling dead on the hood of his car. If that is nota sign I dont know what is. This story opened my mind to the possibility of thesupernatural. I know this book is not for real but it opened a door for thepossibility of something larger than life. That is the main thing that Ireceived from the story from the Callahan Chronicals. After reading this book Ihave learned many things. There are things in life that you must be ready forand I think that this book helped open some windows for me to prepare for theworst and hope for the best. The Callahan Chronicals is a great way to learnabout life in a relatively enjoyable way.

Malcolm Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Community Organizing

Malcolm Hendrix And King Racism is a problem that the American people have grappled with since colonial times. The 1960's saw the rise of Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, who not only influenced the civil rights movement but attempted to solve the problem of racism in this country. On February 16, 1965, Malcolm X gave a speech called "Not Just An American Problem, but a World Problem". In his speech he provides a theory on the relationship between media and racism called "image making" which still has validity today. On first reading, Malcolm's tone is angry and his theory on "image making" sounds absurd. He states: They (racists) use the press to get public opinion on their side. . . this is a science called "image making". they hold you in check through this science of imagery. They even make you look down upon yourself, by giving you a bad image of yourself. Some of our own Black people who have eaten this image themselves and digested it -- until they themselves don't want to live in the Black community. Yet, current television programming seems to favor this idea. Local news programs continue to show "colored" communities as dangerous and gang-infested. They continually rely on the reports of these areas for the bulk of their news and overlook the positive images that residents of these areas try to create. For example, KNTV news continually reports on the thefts and shootings in East San Jose but does not make an effort to show how residents are dealing with these situations. The day a local East San Jose church helped sway the city council to put a streetlight on a very busy intersection, the news pre-empted the report with an accident on another East San Jose intersection. As a result, most people in these communities do not realize that they have power to change their area and have a great desire to move out of these areas. They have become prisoners who have bought into the image of East San Jose. Yet, local news programs are not the only ones to blame for "image making"; documentaries have played a part in the negative images of blacks. Malcolm X makes the claim that the negative image of communities in America are just a small part of the "image making" process. The documentary film has done the same for their African homeland. He states: They (the press) projected Africa in a negative image, a hateful image. They made us think that Africa was a land of jungles, a land of animals, a land of cannibals and savages. It was a hateful image. Current documentaries of Africa are still about their jungles and their tribes. Although they do not have a racist tone, the idea that African people are still uncivilized continues. The result is: Black people here in America who hated everything about us that was African. . . it was you who taught us to hate ourselves simply by shrewdly maneuvering us into hating the land of our forefathers and the people on that continent. These films do have an influence on today's society. From watching today's "black TV", the actors on these shows make fun of these images. Recently, Martin Lawrence made fun of one of his friends; calling him a "spear-thrower" on his hit TV show. The larger problem that Malcolm X did not discuss in his speech is the result of the "image making". The effectiveness of today's media on young minds is great. Only several years have passed since the introduction of a Black Barbie doll. The great action heroes are not colored but are white; only their sidekicks are colored, e.g., Lone Ranger and Tonto. Consequently, the serious Black actor is a precious commodity. It is the Black comedian who is more accepted in today's society because they are able to laugh about the negative black images. The white man, as Malcolm X might agree, would favor the comedian over the serious actor because white men do not want to be reminded about their "crime". The comedian often supports the negative black images that the media has created: large lips, large buttocks, the criminal and the slave. Eddie Murphy is famous for his Mister Robinson character on Saturday Night Live. Robinson is a spoof on Mister Rogers; however, Robinson is a criminal. The image of the black man as a thief continues. Television is not all to blame. The media has made many efforts to create a more positive image of Black America. There is a

The Law of Conservation of Energy Defined

The Law of Conservation of Energy Defined The law of conservation of energy is a physical law that states energy cannot be created or destroyed but may be changed from one form to another. Another way of stating this law of chemistry is to say the total energy of an isolated system remains constant or is conserved within a given frame of reference. In classical mechanics, conservation of mass and conversation of energy are considered to be two separate laws. However, in special relativity, matter may be converted into energy and vice versa, according to the famous equation E mc2. Thus, its more appropriate to say mass-energy is conserved. Example of Conservation of Energy If a stick of dynamite explodes, for example, the chemical energy contained within the dynamite changes into kinetic energy, heat, and light. If all this energy is added together, it will equal the starting chemical energy value. Consequence of Conservation of Energy One interesting consequence of the law of conservation of energy is that it means perpetual motion machines of the first kind are not possible. In other words, a system must have an external power supply to continuously deliver unlimited energy to its surroundings. Its also worth noting that its not always possible to define conservation of energy because not all systems have time translation symmetry. For example, conservation of energy may not be defined for time crystals or for curved space times.

The Utilitarian Art of the Mesolithic Age

The Utilitarian Art of the Mesolithic Age Otherwise known as Middle Stone Age, the Mesolithic Age covered a brief span of around 2,000 years. While it served as an important bridge between the Upper Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages, the art of this period was, well, sort of boring. From this distance, its not nearly as fascinating as the discovery of (and innovations in) the art of the preceding era. And the art of the subsequent Neolithic era is exponentially diverse, besides being more well-preserved and offering us thousands of examples of itself, instead of a handful. Still, lets briefly cover the artistic events of the Mesolithic Age because, after all, its a distinct era from any other. Animal Husbandry During this period, most of the glacial ice in the Northern Hemisphere had retreated, leaving behind geography and climates familiar to us in the present day. Along with the glaciers, certain foods disappeared (the wooly mammoth, for example) and the migration patterns of others (reindeer) changed as well. People gradually adapted, assisted by the facts that more temperate weather and diverse edible plants were there to aid in survival. Since humans didnt have to live in caves or follow herds any longer, this era saw the beginnings of both settled communities and farming. The Mesolithic Age also saw the invention of the bow and arrow, pottery for food storage and the domestication of a few animals- either for food or, in the case of dogs, for help in the hunting of food. MesolithicArt Pottery was beginning to be produced at this time, though it was mostly utilitarian in design. In other words, a pot just needed to hold water or grain, not necessarily exist as a feast for the eyes. The artistic designs were mainly left up to later peoples to create. The portable statuary of the Upper Paleolithic was largely absent during the Mesolithic Age. This is likely a result of people settling down and no longer requiring art that could travel. Since the invention of the arrow had occurred, much of this periods carving time seems to have been spent knapping flint, obsidian and other minerals which lent themselves to sharp, pointy tips. The most interesting Mesolithic Age art that we know of consists of rock paintings. Similar in nature to the Paleolithic cave paintings, these moved out of doors to vertical cliffs or walls of natural rock, often semi-protected by outcroppings or overhangs. Though these rock paintings have been found in locations ranging from the far north in Europe to southern Africa, as well as elsewhere around the globe, the largest concentration of them exists in eastern Spains Levant. While no one can say with certainty, the theory exists that the paintings locations werent chosen at random. The spots may have held sacred, magical or religious significance. Very often, a rock painting exists within close proximity to a different, more suitable spot upon which to paint. Characteristics of Mesolithic Art Between the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras, the biggest shift in painting occurred in the subject matter. Where cave paintings overwhelmingly depicted animals, rock paintings were usually of human groupings. The painted humans typically seem to be engaged in either hunting or rituals whose purposes have been lost to time. Far from being realistic, the humans shown in rock painting are highly stylized, rather like glorified stick figures. These humans look more like pictographs than pictures, and some historians feel they represent the primitive beginnings of writing (i.e.: hieroglyphs). Very often the groupings of figures are painted in repetitive patterns, which results in a nice sense of rhythm (even if were not sure what theyre meant to be doing, exactly).

Project Management - Essay Example Measurement and accountability; check if the task has been a winner and if it has maintained all through. This is done by holding meetings and interviewing the leaders of their respective projects (Ganon, 2004). With the scope first, identify the project schedule and time management in which the project manager should come up with a realistic plan and its efficient management and define the time frame for completion of the project. What are the possible causes of risks in that project, what is their possibility of occurrence and their severity, and what measures can we take to mitigate them ( Patel, 2008). Gantt charts and Critical paths help apparently spot where resources need to be anticipated and apportion them. The Gantt helps to ensure the project is within the budget constraint, a thing Mrs. Penny never took into consideration making the project to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. Of mice and men by John Steinbeck Essay Example for Free

Of mice and men by John Steinbeck Essay Studying stage Drama enables us to see into a world that is very different from our own and to feel compassion for those who are unable to take control of their own lives Of mice and men By John Steinbeck is a very interesting and compelling text, and positions us as the reader to accept Lennie as the victim even though he killed someone, we as the reader are given many insights that some of the other characters do not get to experience, and therefore can get this message as the dominant reading. The earliest accounts of the life of Lennie and George tells us a tale about Lennie and his accidents involving mice, Lennie who gets presents of mice from his aunt, crushes there heads, because he doesnt know his own strength, he loves the mice, and cared for them, but because of his love for the mice they bite him and he crushes the mouses heads, Lennie is definitely mentally retarded, and as such he does things that regular people would not do it would seem that Lennies mentality was not designed for his body, if he was a thin weedy man then he would have no problems, he could pet animals AND make them stay alive, but things arent always as we like them Because the playwright is trying to establish Lennie as the good guy we are also positioned at the scene of their last job, Lennie feels a ladies dress, the woman screams, he holds on, she starts yelling to the police, he holds, and as a result, poor George has to spend a night in a ditch and what was the reason? I only did it to feel how soft it was says Lennie, even though this is still fairly strange, you as the reader can relate to him and say well, it really isnt his fault. Now I know you are wondering, Why did Lennie hold on even through the screams and the yelling police, why didnt he just let go? consider this story, a young child between the ages of 1 and 3 is found near his dead mother, holding on for dear life, and mentally Lennie was much the same way whenever he gets scared or frightened, he will hold on to it, you cannot blame the woman for her reaction, a big tall man grabbing onto her dress, she has every right to feel threatened, and as a result, Lennie gets George into trouble, and they have to spend the night in the ditch. On the farm, curly is picking fights; not only is he picking fights but he is picking fights that he cant win, apart from his height, what exactly did Lennie do? He laughed, oh no, dear God, how will he survive? George was going to teach him a lesson, but he wanted Lennie, this time he went too far, Lennie didnt want to fight curly, but he gave him no choice, he was scared and frightened, and once again, the mentality issue shines brightly, he grabs Curlys hand and he doesnt let go, he crushes every single bone in his hand, and again Lennie is portrayed as the good guy, what else could he do? The final matter is the matter of Curlys wifes death, this even if he is retarded, still classifies as murder, no matter how much they try to sugar coat it, it is still murder, and he pays for it with his own death, he gave George, his best friend, no other choice other than to kill him for his own good, his strength, has been the cause of all these problems right from the beginning, and although you can feel sorry for him, he should have had more common sense, he was retarded, and there is nothing you can do about that, but he should have learnt what was right and appropriate, and killing innocent people, even if it was manslaughter, is still bad. And so we are given an insight into the life of Lennie, we feel compassion for him and George, we have been positioned to draw this conclusion, well, youd be hard pressed to try and prove he wasnt wouldnt you? It seams there is two cases of murder (not counting the various animal deaths) George isnt the bad guy because he did what was best for Lennie, and Lennie wasnt the bad guy because he is retarded.

Teaching Philosophy :: Education Teachers Classroom Essays

Teaching Philosophy Teachers are the sculptors of every child’s future. No other job comes with the satisfaction of knowing that you have made at least the slightest difference in a child’s life. Little things that you say and do will always be remembered. Not only will you be a teacher but you will also play the role as, a friend, mentor, hero, and many others. As a teacher I plan to run my classroom with rules and consequences, but my students will realize that they are treated fairly. They will have a voice and say so concerning what goes on in the classroom. Seating arrangements will depend on classroom instructional activities. There will be lots of group activities, since most kindergarteners aren’t used to being around children their own age. The room will be bright and very colorful to keep their senses alert. My bulletin boards will display the calendar, colors, numbers, and the alphabet. They will include people from all cultures on them. I will have learning centers around the room that the students will be able to go to in their free time. These centers will teach the students to tie their shoes, button their clothes, cut out shapes, color in the lines, and other supplementary skills. My classroom will be run in a democratic fashion, which is pragmatism. The students will have lots of say so over the rules and the way the classroom is run. It will be child centered since the students will be the most important part of the classroom. They will have a voice and say so concerning what goes on in the classro om. These are examples of how I will use the existentialism philosophy. I will be a guide in the learning process of my students. I would establish a non-authoritarian classroom. I want my students to see me as their instructor, not their boss or authority figure. I will run a facilitating classroom with circle seating arrangements, student centered activities, problem solving, and reciprocal teaching. I feel as if I am a pragmatist and I will use the theory or progressivism to run my classroom.

Food Macromolecules

â€Å"Macromolecules are a source of fuel. There are four major types of macromolecules-proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids. This process plays important roles in the life of a cell. (Macromolecules, 2002). The macromolecules that was present in the packaged food product Lipids which are fats. According to (Alters & Alters 2009, p. 49) Fats also provide more energy in our diets that do equivalent amounts of carbohydrates or protein. Protein was also present on the packaged food. Proteins transport and rovide muscle contraction. Alters & Alters 2009, p. 51) Proteins build, maintains, and replaces the tissue in our body. Tissue meaning: muscles, organs, and your immune system. They are also important for the movement of lungs, legs, and protecting you from disease. (Learning about proteins,2008). How much protein do we need each day? Adults should get a minimum of 0. 8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight per day. Increasing protein intake helps reduce the risk of heart disease. (The Nutrition Source: Protein, 2011). Carbohydrates are also present in the packaged food. Carbohydrates provide the body with fuel for physical activity and proper organ function. The best sources of carbohydrates -whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans- promote good health. (The Nutrition Source: Carbohydrates, 2011) Lipids are also present in the packaged food. Lipids are a group of molecules that consist of fats, phospholipids, and cholesterol. This packaged food is a part of a heart healthy diet because it has carbohydrates, low saturated fats, and proteins. Carbohydrates are important for fuel, breaking these bonds and releasing energy to sustain life (Alters & Alters, 2009, p. 47). Large amounts of saturated fats may lead to clogged arteries and risk of heart disease. (Alters & Alters, 2009, p. 50). The product I have chosen to use is Quaker Oatmeal. I consider carbohydrates to be the most important thing listed on the label. Knowing the amount of carbohydrates is important because carbohydrates turn into sugar, and there is only one gram of sugar in this product. When carbohydrates turn into ugar this increases the risk of diabetes if there is to much carbohydrates in your diet. I have never been a health fanatic, but after doing this essay I need to be a little cautious of what I am eating. I have found that reading labels helps us to eat healthier and to make the right choices our life style. I never really understood how carbohydrates work. Now I know the understanding of good and bad carbohydrates. Heart disease runs in my family. I do have a healthy heart but after doing the research for this essay I hope to continue to stay healthy. How New Technology Has Brought About The Changes In The Bank essays

How New Technology Has Brought About The Changes In The Bank essays How New Technology Has Brought About The Changes In The Banking Industry. The new technology has brought rapid changes in the banking industry and financial services. Online banking and electronic payment systems are the new development and diffusion of technology by financial institutions and are expected to result in a more efficient banking system. In addition to the trend of online banks, they have proven to last longer in the banking system. Technology has changed the banking industry because it now offers alternative and better channels through which products and services can be provided to customers. Some examples of the changes in the banking industry are the online banking and access to ATM machine. Online banking is a form of banking that can be done through the use of Internet and can be done at home, work, or wherever there is access to the Network. It allows customers to perform all routine transactions, such as bill payments, electronic transfer, balance inquires, account transfers, investments, and stop payment request. It basically allows the customers to carry out all the transactions just as in a normal bank except withdrawing of cash. This can be done at anytime during the day, and it is less time consuming when compared to waiting in the actual bank building where customers have to wait in long lines. There is hardly any paper work to be done; the customers can carry out transactions from anyplace that has access to the Internet. Once the information has been saved, it doesnt need to be re-entered for similar subsequent checks. Take for example, Virtual Bank, founded in February of 2000, is an entirely online experience, from opening to closing of your accou nt. If you havent been to this companys website, youre in for some fun, not only is every little detail about the company on it, but its even easier to navigate through then the Bank of America web page. This site off...

Problems for Teachers That Hinder Their Effectiveness

Problems for Teachers That Hinder Their Effectiveness Problems that teachers face include handling student needs, lack of parental support, and even criticism from a public that can be largely unaware of their everyday lives. Addressing these problems and bringing awareness to the educational environment that our teachers and students face daily can help improve teacher retention, student success rates, and the overall quality of education in our schools. Balancing a Wide Range of Student Needs No matter what type of school youre talking about, teachers have to deal with a wide range of student needs, but public schools may struggle the most here. While private schools are able to select their students based on an application and assessment of the best fit for the school and community, public schools in the United States are required to take every student. While most educators would never want to change this fact, some teachers are faced with students who distract the rest of the classroom and add a significant challenge. Part of what makes teaching a challenging career is the diversity of the students. All students are unique in having their own background, needs, and learning styles. Teachers have to be prepared to work with all learning styles in every lesson, requiring more prep time and creativity. However, successfully working through this challenge can be an empowering experience for both students and teachers alike. Lack of Parental Support It can be incredibly frustrating for a teacher when parents don’t support their efforts to educate children. Ideally, a partnership exists between school and home, with both working in tandem to provide the best learning experience for students. However, when parents dont follow through with their responsibilities, it can often have a negative impact on the class. Research has proven that children whose parents make education a high priority and stay consistently involved may be more successful academically. Ensuring that students eat well, get enough sleep, study, complete their homework, and are prepared for the school day are just a few of the basic of the things that parents are expected to do for their children. While many of the best teachers go above and beyond to make up for a lack of parental support, a total team effort from the teachers, parents, and students is the ideal approach. Parents are the most powerful and consistent link between children and school since they are there throughout the child’s life while the teachers will change annually. When a child knows that education is essential and important, it makes a difference. Parents can also work to communicate effectively with the teacher and ensure that their child is successfully completing assignments. However, not every family has the ability to provide the necessary supervision and partnership, and some children are left to figure things out on their own. When faced with poverty, a lack a supervision, stressful and unstable home lives, and even parents who arent present, students have to overcome numerous hurdles to even make it school, never mind succeed. These challenges can lead to students failing and/or dropping out of school. Lack of Proper Funding School finance has a significant impact on teachers ability to maximize their effectiveness. When funding is low, class sizes often increase, which impacts instructional curriculum, supplemental curriculum, technology, and various instructional and extracurricular programs. Enrichment programs are cut, supply budgets are limited, and teachers have to get creative. Most teachers understand that this is completely out of their control, but it doesn’t make the situation any less frustrating. In public schools, finances are usually driven by each individual state’s budget and local property taxes, as well as federal funding and other sources, whereas private schools have private funding and often more flexibility in how it is spent. That means public school teachers are often more affected by lack of funding and are limited in how they can spend their money. In lean times, schools are often forced to make cuts that have a negative impact. Most teachers make do with the resources they are given or supplement with their own personal contributions. Overemphasis on Standardized Testing Not every student learns in the same way, and therefore not every student can accurately demonstrate mastery of educational topics and concepts in a similar fashion. As a result, standardized testing can be an ineffective method of assessment. While some teachers are completely against standardized testing, others tell you that they don’t have a problem with the standardized tests themselves but with how the results are interpreted and used. Most teachers say that you can’t get a true indicator of what any particular student is capable of on a single test on any particular day. Standardized tests arent just a pain for students, either; many school systems use the results to determine the effectiveness of the teachers themselves. This overemphasis has caused many teachers to shift their overall approach to teaching to a focus directly on these tests. This not only takes away from creativity and limits the scope of what is taught but can also quickly create teacher burnout and put excess pressure on the teachers to have their students perform well. Standardized testing brings with it other challenges as well. For example, many authorities outside of education only look at the tests bottom line, which hardly ever tell the whole story. Observers need to take much more into account than the overall score. Consider the example of two high school math teachers. One teaches in an affluent suburban school with lots of resources, and one teaches in an inner-city school with minimal resources. The teacher in the suburban school has 95% of her students score proficient, and the teacher in the inner-city school has 55% of his students score proficient. If only comparing overall scores, the teacher in the suburban school would appear to be the more effective teacher. However, a more in-depth look at the data reveals that only 10% of students in the suburban school had significant growth during the year while 70% of the students in the inner-city school had significant growth. So who is the better teacher? You can’t tell simply from standardized test scores, yet a large majority of decision-makers want to use test scores alone to judge both student and teacher performances. Poor Public Perception Weve all heard the old saying Those who can, do. Those who cant, teach. Unfortunately, a stigma is attached to teachers within the United States. In some countries, public school teachers are highly regarded and revered for the service that they provide. Today, teachers continue to be in the public spotlight because of their direct impact on the nation’s youth. Theres the added challenge that the media often focuses on negative stories dealing with teachers, which pulls attention away from their positive impact. The truth is that most teachers are dedicated educators who are in it for the right reasons and doing a solid job. Focusing on a good teacher’s best qualities can help teachers overcome their perceptions and find fulfillment in their profession. Educational Trends When it comes to learning, experts are always looking for the best tools and tactics for educating children. While many of these trends are actually strong and worthy of implementation, adoption of them within schools can be haphazard. Some believe that public education in the United States is broken, which often drives schools to look at ways to reform, sometimes too rapidly. Teachers can be faced with mandated changes in tools, curriculum, and best practices as administrators race to adopt the latest and greatest trends. However, these constant changes can lead to inconsistency and frustration, making teachers lives more difficult. Adequate training isnt always made available, and many teachers are left to fend for themselves to figure out how to implement whatever has been adopted. On the flip side, some schools are resistant to change, and teachers who are educated about learning trends may not receive funding or support to adopt them. This can lead to a lack of job satisfaction and teacher turnover, and it can hold students back from delving into a new way to learn that may actually help them achieve more.

Leadership discussion broad Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 3

Leadership discussion broad - Essay Example Most companies such as IBM, Capital One has been outsourcing their customer service and backdoor operations to Business Processing Organizations (BPO) already because it is more economical to have them done by third party vendors who has to expertise than for companies to do the operations themselves. Even in the production side of the company, such as the production of the company’s parts that make up its products are outsourced. The classic case for this is Samsung and Apple where parts and accessories of their smartphones and other products are outsourced to third party vendors. They however keep the software and hardware design as well as research and development within the company so as not to give away their strategic advantage and technical competencies. Outsourcing other value creation activities may be cost effective for companies to do but there are also risk involved in it. Outsourcing company operations inadvertently exposes the technical advantage of a firm making it vulnerable to industrial espionage. Another is the case of Apple where it the company is accused of unethical business practice because its third party vendors employed children and use unfair labor practices. This may not be the doing of Apple because it is a reputable company, but the less than desirable labor practices of its third party vendors hurt the company’s

Cost-Benefit Analysis of A Public Infrastructure Project Assignment

Cost-Benefit Analysis of A Public Infrastructure Project - Assignment Example Thus, to come up with a public infrastructure, several factors will be considered to look at both the advantage and causality in order to achieve the optimal benefit that is required. Public infrastructure is considered to be of good interest to the society if its final outcome benefits surpass the cost of implementing the total project. If the cost of implementing the infrastructure is more than the benefit the society is supposed to enjoy after its completion, then, the project is of no much benefit to the society. To realize the cost benefit of a public infrastructure, a cost benefit analyses is carried out to investigate the benefit the society is expected to achieve once the said infrastructure is completed. If the result shows that the project has a positive benefit, then, the infrastructure should be implemented. If the result on the other side reveals that the benefits of the project upon completion reflect negative benefit, then, the project should be dropped (Campbell and B rown, 15). 1.1Project description The public infrastructure that is illustrated under this paper is of power plant construction nature which is located in Middle East and North African region. This region has a high potential of solar and wind energy because it receives a lot of energy from sun in six hours than what a man consumes in one year and is home to top sites of wind potential. This project is expected to generate electricity by use of massive set up of solar and wind farms networks and connect the power to Europe through a Europe- Mediterranean electricity network. A high voltage direct current (HDVC) transmission cables will be used in the transmission of the power. The power plant will involve spreading of concentrating solar power systems, wind parks and photovoltaic systems in desert of North Africa in places like Sahara desert. This means that the power plant will produce energy that is renewable instead of use of fossil fuel that is not renewable. This project will p rovide a substantial demand of electricity in Middle East and Northern Africa region and a 15% of electricity need in Europe. Thus, due to the fact that this project is expected to benefit those three regions, it has being dubbed as EUMENA which means European Union, Middle East and Northern Africa. Investment under this public infrastructure is expected to cost up to 400 billion pounds by 2050. Under this project, Europe is expected to lead in fighting climate change and economies of the Northern African countries and Europe, grow due to green house gas emissions limitation. This project has the potential to satisfy 15 percent of the electricity demand in Europe and much needed electricity in Middle East and North Africa. 240,000 jobs in Germany are likely to be created if this project is implemented and generate electricity worth 2 trillion by 2050. Energy wastage is expected to be reduced under this project because it will enable transfer of energy from areas with surplus to area s it is needed. The grid will help in taking advantage of the large amounts of energy that is likely to be sourced from large scale sources of renewable energy that are remote. The construction of the transmission grid will reduce difference between actual generating capacity and the minimum

The Ethics of Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Ethics of Care - Essay Example From this research, it is clear that the care ethics regards to the principles that people usually have and follow the way of dealing with every relationship in day to day life. According to â€Å"The ethics of care: Personal, Political, and Global†, written by Virginia Held, the care ethics has not limited to this but now it can be explained involving a vast area as care ethics can be seen in case of medical practice, political life, war, international relationship, organization of a society and law. These things are involved in such a manner that they are now a part of it. According to Sara Ruddick, the pioneer of care ethics, in her article â€Å"Maternal thinking† which explained the experience of mothering and the care she gives to the baby, the care for the relationship around her and also provides a unique approach to the ethics. She also targets on feminist politics which was not of much importance those days. Since there are many forms of ethics like the virtue ethics, which decides about a person by looking at their behavior and to decide be either good or bad to them according to that person. The care ethics can be considered as a form of virtue ethics in some instances but it does not completely rely on principles of virtue ethics. To promote the interest of everyone towards oneself as mentioned in â€Å"what would satisfactory moral theory be like†, which is the principle of Rachel’s utilitarianism will sometimes collide with the aspects of the care ethics. Though it consists of few principles of them, they are separate entity altogether. Features of care ethics: According to Nel Nodding, caring for those who are not related to us but need some attention is the main principle of care ethics. This can be evaluated though an example. When a child fell while playing, the care we show to him when he is our own child should never be different from the one we show to others child. This makes sense as the care might vary from o ne person to another. She also suggests caring for those who are in need for it and stress one to show some responsibility to respond for such people. This might include the aged people who are facing incurable diseases or illness of later life. These people will have the craving for care and giving care to them is worth. The care ethics has good value for emotions according to Virginia Held. Not all the emotions are entertained but some of them are handled with great care. According to this theory, the one who develops this value for emotion will also train themselves to help the one in need, who or else fail to make this happen. This is very important to make a relationship successful one. Importance The care ethics completely rely on the fact to care for everyone. This creates a limitation to act according to the behavior of the other person but it does not stop one from caring. Most of the care ethics refers to a relationship and many authors support this statement. According to Annette Baier, the care ethics depends on many character traits which include sympathy, compassion and gentleness. Sometimes agreeability also plays a major role in balancing a relationship. This not only helps one to be close to another but creates a basic relationship with everyone in turn brings harmony among individuals. Evaluation: Most of the time, the care ethics create controversies. There are many incidents where the ethics are both for and against the topic. Creating an environment where one should care for other is right but sometimes it has to be according to the act and behavior of the other person. Showing a lot of care for those who worth it is of no use. Many times we come across such situation where people don’t bother is someone is hurt or ill but in turn they seek for attention when they are not well. Helping such people might be good but not always. Expecting a bit of the same when one is not well is required is what Carol Gilligan says. Though these aspe cts like valuing emotions are

Do You Believe Blaines Current Capital Structure Finance Essay

Do You Believe Blaines Current Capital Structure Finance Essay Do you believe Blaines current capital structure and payout policies are appropriate? Why or why not? Blaines capital structure and dividend policy are not entirely appropriate from the point of view of a shareholder of the firm. The reasons for that can be summed up as follows: No leverage: The optimum mix of debt and equity in the capital structure will maximize shareholders return. Company should take on debt to acquire new firms and expand its operations. Low ROE : Attributed to Low leverage 2006 ROE data clearly shows up that ROE of all the comparable firms are much higher than that of Blaine. Increasing Dividend payout ratio As calculated in Question no.3, the cost of equity of the firm is close to 9% whereas ROE is 11%. This is a good proposition for shareholders. This can be enhanced by acquiring other companies using cash balance that the company has. Decreasing EPS Even when EPS is constantly decreasing over the last three years, the policy of giving more or less same amount in dividend may cost company in future. Way of financing of new acquisitions Blaine Inc. should rather raise capital in debt rather than issuing new stocks to raise capital. This will ensure EPS constant and will be good for shareholders. Should Dubinski recommend a large share repurchase to Blaines board? What are the primary advantages and disadvantages of such a move? No, Dubinski should not recommend a large share repurchase to the board. The reason for that is although the firm is public listed, still a large percentage of share is owned by family itself. Therefore, buying back the shares is as good as unlisting the company. Secondly, there are growth avenues wherein the company may require cash. The company should, like last two years, go for acquisition. This will bring value to shareholders. Else, during the times of new acquisitions, company would have to raise capital from the market and due to flotation cost; the cost of equity will be much higher. Consider the following share repurchase proposal: Blaine will use $209 million of cash from its balance sheet and $50 million in new debt-bearing interest at the rate of 6.75% to repurchase 14.0 million shares at a price of $18.50 per share. How would such a buyback affect Blaine? Consider the impact on, among other things, BKIs earnings per share and ROE, its interest coverage and debt ratios, the familys ownership interest, and the companys cost of capital. Effect of Share Buyback Particulars Value Remarks Equity Capital_Pre Buyback ($) 488,363,000 2006, Exhibit 2 Equity Capital_Post ($) 279,363,000 No. of Shares outstanding before buyback 59,052,000 No. of shares bought back 14,000,000 Total outstanding Shares 45,052,000 EPS_Old($) 0.91 EPS_New ($) 1.19 Percent change in EPS 31.08% P/E ratio 17.86 Market Price (S) 21.30 Percent change in Share price 19.28% Debt_equity Book Value 17.90% Debt_equity Market Value 5.21% Debt interest rate 6.75% Interest to be paid ($) 3375000 Interest coverage ratio 0.05 ROE 0.11 ROE_new 0.19 Change in ROE 74.52% Cost of Equity 9.01% Cost of Debt 6.25% Effective Tax rate 40.00% Expected future tax rate D/V 4.95% WACC 8.75% WACC_Old 9.01% Change in WACC -2.89% Equity beta Calculation for the Firm Market Cap Equity beta (Net)D/E Net Debt Cash Securities Total Debt D/E (1) (2) (3) (4)=(1)x(3) (5) (6)=(4)+(5) (7)=(6)/(1) Home and Hearth Design 776,427 1.03 45.18% 350,790 21,495 372,285 47.95% AutoTech Appliances 13,978,375 1.24 31.74% 4,436,736 536,099 4,972,835 35.58% XQL Corp. 5,290,145 0.96 17.97% 950,639 21,425 972,064 18.37% Bunkerhill Inc. 3,962,780 0.92 6.01% 238,163 153,680 391,843 9.89% Easyliving Systems 418,749 0.67 -15.47% -64,780 242,102 177,322 42.35% Blaine Kitchenware 959,596 0.56 -24.06% -230,879 230,866 -13 0.00% Average 25,386,072 0.90 10.23% 25.69% Unlevered Beta 0.78 Beta_Blaine 0.80 Ownership Scenario: For last 3 years and post share buyback 2004 2005 2006 2007 Outstanding Shares 41,309,000 48,790,000 59,052,000 45,052,000 Ownership of Founders descendants 62% 52% 43% 57% Assumptions Used Effective Tax rate has been taken equal to 40%, same as for Blaine. As a member of Blaines controlling family, would you be in favor of this proposal? Would you be in favor of it as a non-family shareholder? As a family member of Blaine, the news of buyback has to be evaluated in both the ways. The Pros are: Consolidating Control- This will increase the shareholding close to 57%. Return of Cash Surplus to Shareholders-As of now in April, 2007, there are no any plans of buybacks. Therefore, keeping cash intact leads to opportunity cost of shareholders. This will add value for shareholders. An effective defense against takeover- as the market is consolidating, it will be a wise decision to protect the company from hostile takeovers. The cons are: Effect on expansionary plans- As cash will be used to buy back shares and the company wont be able to raise money from markets in the near future, opportunities of acquisitions will be marred. Even if, company will raise capital from equity market, flotation cost will be high and so cost of equity will be comparatively high. Use of Leverage- the Company has been against the policy of taking debt. Taking debt of $50 million for share buyback will not go in line with the companys policy.

Anorexia Essay -- essays research papers

The Causes and Effects of Anorexia   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When I think of anorexia, a few things come to mind. I think of really bad episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 and Baywatch in which females, ususally teenagers, starve themselves and take diet pills. The eating problem is always resolved within the timespan of one 30 minute episode. From the research I've done thus far on anorexia, I now know that this is a very unrealistic representation of what is actually a very serious disease.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The purpose of this study is twofold. First, I have done extensive research on the causes and effects of anorexia. Secondly, I will produce a survey that asks basic questions about anorexia. I will give these to young adults from the ages of 15 to 35. This will serve as my means to find out just how much people of that certain age group know about the potentially deadly disease of anorexia. This research is not only to inform myself about anorexia, but also to inform myself about the knowledge or lack thereof that young people have about the disease.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Most people believe that anorexia is mainly a young females' disease. This is not necessarily true. In fact, studies within the past few years show that male anorexia is about as widespread as in females. In actuality, 80 percent of the people diagnosed with anorexia over the age of 45 are males(Heywood, 1996). Other misconceptions are that ...

Your Identity

Elvin Roperto Professor Gallers English 101 February 16, 2012 You’re Identity Back in the day, few wondered about their ancestors. The majority of people thought they knew all about their ancestor’s history. Who they we’re, their nationality, and their native language. But today in society many are shocked to find out that their ancestor history or past isn’t true at all because of DNA genealogy. If you thought that your ancestors we’re Puerto Rican and they actually turned out to be Mexican. Would you freak out? Would you have to change your ways?Would you change your traditions? A genealogical DNA test examines the nucleotides in specific locations on a person's DNA to find out where a person’s ancestor comes from. The test results are not meant to have any medical information and the test results do not determine genetic diseases or disorders. They are only intended to give genealogical information. To take a genealogical DNA test all you have to do is a painless cheek-scrapping at your home and mail the sample to a genetic genealogy laboratory for testing. There are a few types a test you can use, but the most popular tests are the Y chromosome test and the mitochondrial DNA test. These tests can determine where your ancestors originated from. I disagree, just because a test tells you where you came from doesn’t mean you have to change anything about yourself. Your Identity isn’t based on your family tree’s past. It’s based on everything we see, feel, hear, taste, smell, and read. Every person you meet, every conversation you have, every event in your life, and the way you interpret all sights, sounds, tastes, smells, actions, and events, shape up who you are as a human being. And nothing in the world should change that, not even your ancestor’s past. On the other hand, can you define yourself as a person without your nationality? How much of who is you are based on your nationality? Can your nationality be a part of your soul? A person's nationality says much about their culture outlook on life, the way they conduct their lives aspirations, and relationships. The way you act, talk, feel can be a result from your nationality. So maybe it’s possible that you an potentially lose yourself because of believing in something that you are not. In general, I can agree with Harmon. Knowing your nationality can make you understand a bit more about your Identity whether in a positive or negative way Overall, DNA genealogy should not change who you are, even though nationality is a big part of your Identity. If you do find out you’re from a different country, you can try to change some of your traditions and cultural views but you’ll still be you. Dream House Essay

Everyone has their own thoughts about their dream house.  These days homes are more affordable because of the economy and all the foreclosures makes it much easier to afford a really nice house. My dream house is not a fancy house that I could never afford; its a home I could see my wife and I having in the future. I have seen many homes that I thought to myself, this house would be perfect. A few characteristics I want to describe about my dream house are the appearance, location, and decor. I want my house to have a nice large home with coffee stained wood finish on the outside full of crystal clear windows of all different sizes. I imagine as you walk into my home there would be high ceilings and hanging over the entryway would be a big crystal chandelier. When entering the home, there would also be a place for you to hang your coat, rest, and take off your shoes from a long day’s work. I want a house that is not brand new but not too old either because I do not want to have fix the house constantly or hear the creaking floors while walking around. I always thought it would be nice to have solar panels, a windmill, and a garden so I can be self reliant. The grass would be a bright healthy green almost as if it was not real. Around the house would be a large fence to allow for our privacy and to keep the animals in. My dream house will be in a community, but I want it to be in an area that is not to busy for convenience and for the safety of our future children. I always thought it would be nice to have a couple of acres for my dogs to run about and a beautiful lake stocked with fish for the dogs to go into and cool off during the hot summers. Illinois is a beautiful state and would be a nice place to settle down and have this dream house. Another significant thing about the home would be the long cobblestone driveway you would have to travel up leading to our home and front porch. It would also be nice to have a day room attached to the house with windows that easily open and close so my wife could sit out there in the winter to smoke and not be so cold. I want the inside to be tasteful, like I imagine a doctor’s home looking. There would be two floors and a basement. When you first walk in, you see the family room which is very calm and relaxing. You continue to the kitchen and dining room with an open floor plan. The basement would be split in half for both my wife and I. My part of the basement would be man themed, full of energy and excitement. There would be a pool table, arcade style games, a shadow box full of military memorabilia, big televisions, and gaming systems. My wife and I would have the master suite upstairs with a California king Temporpedic bed sitting with a beautiful oak finished baseboard and headboards, an enormous television, big bay windows to allow the cool breezes in during the hot, humid summers, and big dark curtains to keep the sun out during the mornings. I do not have any children currently but hope to have one or two in the future and they would also have bedroom up stairs. I would like their bedrooms to be kid oriented so for example if we have a boy nice blues and clouds or jungle with animals. If its a girl then pinks and pony’s or whatever it is my wife decides. My dream home will have an elegant appearance, be in a convenient location, and be tastefully decorated. I also believe a home like this would be perfect for the holidays or family gathering and would allow me to see my family more. These are all the things that would make my home perfect for my wife and I in addition I look forward to making this dream home a reality.
